Cedar Rapids Makes New York Times

When I was going to school in Connecticut*, I bought The New York Times every Sunday. It would last me all week.

I haven't done that for years. In fact, I haven't read it at all for years.

But, thankfully, Nancy does! She alerted me to an article about Cedar Rapids' recovery from last year's flood in yesterday's paper.

A couple of things come out in the article:

  • Cedar Rapidians are doers, not complainers.
  • Frustration in dealing with governments is great.

You can read the article here The New York Times.

* Would you believe that was 50 years ago!

Warren Williams Hospitalized

Update Friday, August 28:
The doctors are pleased with the progress Warren has made the last few days. And of course Sharla is, too! They plan to begin weaning him from some of the machines he's on and gradually allow him to wake up.

Tomorrow, Sharla plans to move into the Gift of Life Transplant House, where all residents are in the same boat and therefore provide great support to other residents.

Photo of Keith and Warren Williams.Warren Williams, LSHS '60, has been hospitalized at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester for two weeks and will be there for several more due to a heart condition.

Eleven years ago, doctors replaced a valve in his heart. This enabled him to have a great quality of life for several years, for which Warren was very thankful.

Over the last year or so, problems arose. A pacemaker/defibrulator was installed, a device Warren refers to as "Sparky."

In July, an additional surgery was performed which, it was hoped but not guaranteed, would fully restore the natural rhythm. The hoped-for results did not materialize.

Due to the passage of time over the years and the recent problems, further deterioration occured. A possible solution: a heart transplant.

Warren is now officially on the heart transplant list.

Warren and Sharla, who have lived in Brainerd for decades, have three daughters and five(?) grandchildren. The daughters live in Savannah, GA; Indianapolis, IN; and Shanghai, China.

During our trip to Minnesota in July, we had another great lunch with Warren and Sharla. Our pattern has been to stay at my brother-in-laws "cabin" at Outing, then call and arrange to meet Warren at a restaurant for lunch. They usually turn out to be a two to three hour lunch, as we have a lot of visiting to get caught up on. This year was no exception. The picture above was taken following this year's event.

Warren is very interested in genealogy and history, especially as it relates to businesses. He's uncovered some interesting facts, of which neither of us had ever heard, related to the early days of Lime Springs. Better yet, he's agreed to write an article about them for The Lime Springs Herald.

Here's wishing that he'll be able to do that in a relatively short time and polish his Studebaker, too!

The Webmaster Recommends---

With this new format for The Lime Springs Page, articles can be moved around, including being moved "up" or "down" in the list of articles or even to different pages or sections. That hasn't happened very often but is possible. (That's just one of the features of the new system.)

Because of this and other reasons, you just might have missed an article or two. Here are a couple which I hope no Lime Springer misses:

  • Wonders of Lime Springs
This article describes nine wonders of Lime Springs, with each description written by elementary school students. It just might give you a new view or a new appreciation of Lime Springs!
It's worth a read! Just click on "Wonders of Lime Springs" in the menu at the left.
And it would be even better if the Webmaster would insert the pictures which go with the articles!! (Sorry, folks.)

  • Sheri and Lee at Fifty
This is a poem by Gary Thomas in recognition of the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Sheryl (Moldt) and Lee Sloan. Gary, Sheryl, and I were classmates at LSHS.
I think this is a great poem which tells the story of the Sloan's well and demonstrates one of Gary's unique talents.
Click on "Gary's Rhymes" in the menu to the left and you'll be taken to a great picture of Gary, then the poem!

Dale Kitchen Has Passed Away

Update: You can read a complete obituary and see a great picture of Dale on The Lime Springs Herald's website; just Click Here.

Dale Kitchen, battling pancreatic cancer since last Christmas, has passed away.

Early this morning, his brother James stated it this way on CaringBridge:

Photo of Dale Kitchen and grandkids."Well Dale is great, happy, safe, and is perfect.  He took a very hard road to geat there, but he has made the journey.  Their is nothing llike a death to make a person take a look at them selfs and appreciate the joys that circle them.  Dale touched alot of people and I am glad he done that and I am glad to be a part of his joy.

In this day of sadness, I believe that Dale and me forsure want all to CELEBRATE the life of Dale!!!  Dale would do it by cooking great food, fireworks, helping somebody, telling jokes, takeing time to talk, mostly on the phone while he was trucking.

TO ALL MY WISH IS FOR ALL TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF DALE

:Dale liked to go out and eat a good steak:

Thanks
James Kitchen"

Even though Dale was not a full-time resident of Lime Springs, he spent a lot of time there. Truckers and airline pilots can do that, you know. Their jobs can let them spend time where they want to be.

And Dale chose to spend time in Lime Springs so had a house in Lime Springs and one in California.

He chose to spend his last few months in Lime Springs, near family, life-long friends, and other relatives. If you've been following his journey on CaringBridge, it's easy to see why! He had an army of acquantances all over, but generally centered around Lime Springs.

Because of our age difference, I didn't know Dale well. I think I met him for the first time at the last LSHS reunion when a plaque was presented in recognition of the contributions his parents, Harry and Dorothy, had made to the community.

Then a couple of years ago, I was passing through town and he was there for a few days. We got together at the counter in what was then Jimmy's and had a nice chat.

Because of that meeting, I wasn't surprised at the number of folks who responded on CaringBridge! Dale was a just plain likeable guy!

Dale has fought the good fight and has gone to his reward. He leaves behind a large and caring family, and an even larger and caring community of friends far and wide. May they all remember the good times with Dale and be ready to be with him again.

Our sympathy goes out to his family in this time of grief.

The Second Fifty Years

Photo of Mary and Dave Yeoman 50 years after their marriage.

This is a little update of the Yeoman's Golden Anniversary Celebration.

The photo above was taken 50 years after they were married, within only a couple of hours. They've weathered the time pretty well, haven't they!

Apparently the Yeoman DNA has a large and well-formed musical gene. Their three children, enhanced by son-in law Janson, sang a few songs, one of which was extra special as all eleven grandchildren joined in.

And then there was the Staley Family Band—all seven of Janet and Janson's children, each on a different instrument, forming a band an playing "Young Love." Janson had arranged the song to fit the instruments available. Not only that, he arranged it to fit the skill levels of the band members; no small task. He had the great wisdom to make the baritone part the lead part, ably played by Nathan. (Oh, did I mention that I played the baritone in the LSHS band?)

The family had scouted about 60 years worth of photos and put together a slide show chronicaling Dave and Mary's time together.

All in all, it was a great party and should encourage Dave and Mary to charge on into the second fify years of marriage with renewed vim, vigor, and confidence that they have done a great job. Now they can sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
